In addition to the right to take maternity, paternity and adoption leave, teachers are entitled to take statutory unpaid parental leave as outlined below.



Parental leave comprises a maximum of 13 weeks which must be taken before your child’s 5th birthday or the 5th anniversary of the child’s adoption.


The leave is in respect of each child for whom the employee has parental responsibility. For example, parents of triplets are entitled to 39 weeks (if they can afford to take the time off without payment).


No more than four weeks parental leave can be taken in any one year.

The leave may only be taken in whole weeks (or part-time weeks for teachers employed on part-time contracts).



The teacher must provide 21days notice of the intention to take leave, and of when the leave begins and ends.
